New year, same shit

Happy New Year! The shit show that was 2021 has finished and 2022 is here. I’ve not posted for a while cause as usual my health has been up and down. On my good days I’m trying my hardest to spend time with Hubby and the kids and then on my bad days I’m in bed. Since the start of the year the good to bad ratio has been about 50:50 so that’s given me plenty of time to binge some box sets. Here’s what I’ve been watching…

Dopesick: Disney+

This series is bloody amazing! It’s based on the book by Beth Macy and uses the stories of real people to show how the opioid crisis in America was created by Perdue Pharma when they invented and marketed OxyContin. I found it incredible that this pharmaceutical company told so many lies and exploited so many vulnerable patients just to make more and more money.

Yellowjacket’s: Sky Atlantic

This series tells the story of a high school football team on their way to the national finals when their plane crashes in the wilderness. It flits from when the girls were stranded to them as adults 25 years later. There’s one episode left and I can’t wait to see how it ends.

Anne: ITV

Anne is based on the Hillsborough disaster and the families 32 year fight for justice. I didn’t know a lot about Hillsborough before but watching this 4 parter made me understand that as well as losing loved ones on the day the way the families were treated afterwards was a disgrace. The story was made even more poignant for me as a few days earlier Big Fella had gone to his first football match with his mates instead of with Hubby and I just couldn’t imagine him not coming home from it.

A very British scandal: BBC

I liked Claire Foy in the Crown and she played another aristocratic character in this drama based on the real life divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyle in the 60’s. I enjoyed the first episode but then found that the following two dragged a bit.

Dexter, New Blood: Sky Atlantic

Dexter was one of my all time favourite box sets so when I saw that they had reprised the character for a spin off series I was super happy. If you like a bit of blood then this is definitely the series for you, although to fully understand all the references it is best to watch Dexter first.

The Good Wife: Alibi

I stumbled across this back in December when I was in hospital. I was looking for a show that had quite a few seasons with a fair few episodes in each season and this was exactly that. Alicia is the ‘good wife’ who stands by her husband (who is the state attorney) after a sex scandal goes public. He goes to jail and she goes back to work after being a stay at home mum for 15 years. She’s also a lawyer so the show has storylines rooted in legal issues and politics but also how she’s coping with her new life. Michael J Fox has some guest appearances in it as another lawyer and he’s genius in it.

The Good Fight: Amazon Prime

This is set one year after the Good Wife ends and is a spin off show featuring some of the characters but it also introduces lots of new faces. This is set during Trump’s time in office so there’s lots of political references to that. Seasons 1-3 are free on Amazon prime but 4 and 5 aren’t so I reckon I’m going to have to buy the DVDs!

Money Heist: Netflix

This is a Spanish show but is dubbed in English  it’s about a criminal mastermind, The Professor, who has plans to rob the Bank Of Spain so he recruits a group of cons and thrives to help him carry it out. Netflix bought the rights after the first series and you can tell that more money was pumped into as as the special effects get better and the stunts are bigger. The writer of this has such an amazing mind and although they’re criminals you can’t help supporting them and wanting them to win.

This is us: Amazon Prime

This is quite possibly my favourite tv series of all time and if you’ve not watched it you are missing out! It follows a family with triplets through life and goes from when they were babies to present day and everywhere in between. It’s heartwarming and uplifting but does deal with some gritty issues like drug addiction, death and disability. The final season has just begun on Amazon and I hate the fact it’s a weekly drop so I can’t just binge watch it all. I will be so sad when this ends; I might just have to watch it all over again!

So there you have it- my little review of what I’ve been watching. Let me know if you’ve got any recommendations for me…

Light at the end of tunnel

I’m sat writing this blog post in St Marks, the specialist bowel hospital in London. So much has happened in the last few weeks; it’s all been a bit of a whirlwind. But I finally feel like there is some hope at the end of the tunnel. Let me tell you why.  At the beginning of June I was admitted yet again to QMC in Nottingham with huge amounts of pain, my bowels not working properly and just feeling generally unwell. I had only been home a couple of weeks since the admission in May but I had been feeling so rubbish most of my time had been spent in bed. I had tried everything I could to stay at home but the pain had become so bad I was barely able to stand or take a few steps on my own.  I had expected to maybe be in for a week or two to get stronger pain meds and get back on my feet but I ended up being in for almost a month. They put me on morphine injections and ketamine but then stopped them when my heart rate dropped to 30 beats per minute and my breathing to 7 breaths a minute. Th

The light at the end of the tunnel is a train

Last week was a busy and pretty crappy week for me health wise. I had to go and have blood tests done with the nutrition nurses and I had two hospital appointments; one with the gallbladder surgeon in Nottingham and the other with colorectal surgeon at St Marks. I was hoping to have at least one surgery date to write in the diary following these appointments but I came home empty handed on both occasions. Here’s what happened.  I began noticing over the last few weeks that I’ve started feeling really crappy. I’m feel lucky to have been at home for the last 6 months and I have been the most well I have been for years but it felt like things had shifted slightly recently but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. But years of being sick means I know my body and I can tell when something isn’t right. I have been feeling permanently exhausted and having way more bad days than good. I’ve gone back to spending 2, 3 or more consecutive days in bed, unable to do anything but watch tv and sleep.

The wrong size line

I’m on the M1 heading back to Nottingham after a road trip to St Marks to get my line repaired. But this is me, and as usual it wasn’t a smooth ride. More like a bloody shit show. So what happened? Let me tell you… After being admitted to QMC in Nottingham on Sunday with a broken Hickman line I was taken down to Interventional Radiology on Monday afternoon to get my line repaired. Firstly, I couldn’t believe it was happening so quickly and secondly I didn’t want to get too excited because, well it’s me, and usually things don’t go according to plan. And sadly I right to rein in the excitement.  When the doctor came to consent me for the procedure it was for a replacement, not a repair. I assumed he had made a mistake so I told him I was there to get my line repaired and was definitely not there for a new one. He looked at me and said “I hate to be the bearer of bad news…” and that’s a sentence that never bodes well. He then went on to say that they didn’t have any repair kits and that
